5 Places on My Travel Bucket List (That Should Be on Yours Too)

We can all read articles about the best places to travel around the world. But when it comes to our travel bucket list, it’s incredibly personal. Everyone has different desires for their vacations; some want something more relaxing while others are out there seeking adventures. I prefer a mix of both with a chance to see art and history along with beautiful scenery. This is a list of five of my dream destinations (in no particular order) that I think you should consider adding to your own list.

Hokkaido, Japan

When people are looking into Japan, I feel like they often turn to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and other southern parts of Japan. Which don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely worth visiting. But the northern parts of Japan, while often overlooked, can be just as beautiful! Hokkaido is the northernmost part of Japan’s main islands. It’s known for its volcanoes, onsens (if you’ve never been to an onsen and are going to Japan definitely add it to your list!) and ski areas. It has beautiful landscapes, such as the rainbow meadows of Furano, or the ‘frost flowers’ that form on Lake Akan. I’ve been to Japan once but never made it up this north. If I were to go again, Hokkaido is high on my list!

Rome, Italy

Rome is another high bucket list destination for me. While I would love to see the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, my heart really lies with the Galleria Borghese and Vatican Museums. With my background in art, I am dying to explore Rome and see pieces of history I had the opportunity to study in school be brought to life in person. Everything else is a major bonus! Not to mention the authentic Italian dishes!

Bavaria, Germany

Bavaria, Germany is like stepping into a storybook with delicious food. From the Neuschwanstein Castle to the medieval towns, every step will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The idea of wandering downtown drinking tea (as I would never drink coffee) or taking a scenic train ride on the Bayerische Zugspitze Railway are why this is on my list. They also have amazing festivals, including Oktoberfest where you can indulge in a variety of food, including those amazing giant pretzels! I know that would be my husband’s favorite!

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

I will admit there are many things that terrify me about Australia. Mainly all the poisonous animals. But if I were ever to go to Australia, the Great Barrier Reef would be it! What do you mean they have the only underwater art museum in the Southern Hemisphere, sign me up! Pair that with the pure white beaches on the Whitsunday Islands and a scenic helicopter ride, and I’ll take my chances.

Savannah, Georgia

This might surprise many of you, but not every travel bucket list destination has to be super far. It can be right here in the US. In fact, Savannah is only a 4-hour drive from me, but I’ve just yet to make it there. But when I do, an evening riverboat cruise is a must! Savannah is on my list for its historic charm, beautiful scenery, and the peaceful feeling of wandering through downtown streets. It’s beautiful year-round, and I especially love the Spanish moss!

These are five of the destinations on my travel bucket list. But my goal is not to keep them there forever. One day I hope to check off each destination and replace them with new ones!
